KRISHNAGAR, 31 OCT: A 38-year-old person was charred to death in a major fire that broke out in an unauthorised godown where kerosene and diesel were illegally stored. The incident occurred at Jugnitala in Bethuadahari under Nakashipara police station limits in Nadia at around 11.30 am today.
Police officials said three fire-tenders were pressed into service and the fire brigade officials fought over an hour to douse the flame. Later, the fire brigade officials recovered a charred body of a person from inside the godown. The dead was later identified as Ranjit Bairagya (38), a local resident who was the worker of the godown.
The fire brigade officials said there were several barrels inside the godown which somehow caught fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, they said.
Local residents first informed the police after they watched thick dark smoke billowing out of the godown.
They also alleged that one Amar Sarkar illegally stored kerosene, diesel and chemicals in his godown. He used to prepare diesel-like oil by mixing kerosene and chemicals and sell it to the market. “His business was completely illegal and we repeatedly lodged complaints to the local police urging them to stop his illegal business. Moreover, his godown was situated in the populated areas and we apprehended such an incident. But, the police did not pay any heed to our complaints,” a local resident said.
Meanwhile, Amar Sarkar is absconding following the incident.
