115 candidates file nomination for Krishnagar civic body polls, rebel TMC leaders contesting against party candidates

KRISHNAGAR, 9 FEB: A total of 115 candidates have submitted their nomination papers before the returning officer in Krishnagar Collectorate office for Krishnagar municipal election scheduled on 27 February.

Among the candidates, 18 Independent candidates have filed their nominations so far. Of the Independent candidates most are rebel Trinamul Congress leaders who were debarred from getting tickets.

At least nine rebel Trinamul Congress leaders many of them are former councilors of the party have joined the Congress and they are now contesting as either Congress candidates or Independent candidates supported by the Congress.

Kajal Kar, a prominent TMC leader has joined the Congress after deserting the Trinamul Congress. His wife Monika Kar is now contesting as a Congress candidate from ward number 17.

Three prominent TMC leaders who were councilors in the previous boards – Anupam Biswas, Dilip Das and Dilip Biswas have also deserted the Trinamul Congress soon after their names were not nominated by Trinamul Congress. Anupam Biswas and Dilip Das are now contesting as Independent candidates while Dilip Biswas is now contesting as a Congress candidate.

This apart, Ayan Dutta, son of the late prominent TMC leader and MLA Gouri Dutta, is now contesting as an Independent candidate supported by the Congress. Ayan Dutta and his father had joined BJP before the last assembly polls from TMC.

According to the Municipal returning officer, as many as 63 candidates have filed their nomination papers today, he last day of filing nomination papers. 22 candidates from BJP, 18 from Congress, 3 from BSP, 2 from CPI-M, 1 each of AITC, CPI and RSP have filed nominations.
