BURDWAN, 5 APRIL: Thin fumes from the fire-doused houses mixing quickly in the hot April air when the briskly cops were knocking on the doors harder at Santoshpur village here in Burdwan East today where the entire male members already have deserted their families as the police resorted to indiscriminate actions after last night’s arson.
Several houses, vehicles were torched after a youth was axed by his childhood friend at the village.
The SP, Burdwan East, Kamanashis Sen said: “We’ve booked 39 persons from Santoshpur on charges of arson, destruction of property so far and hunt for many others are still on.”
A special team of CID’s fingerprint experts today reached the village and collected samples. Saibal Bagchi – one of the CID officials said: “We’re carrying the samples to our Kolkata laboratory for detailed examination that will help detection of the accused persons involved in the mayhem as well.”
Four houses were set on fire, two tractors one car and three motorcycles, haystacks were torched at a random in presence of the policemen at Santoshpur last evening after a fish trader was hacked to death allegedly by his friend.
The residents exploded in protest when the body of Utpal Ghosh (28) – the victim was carried back to the village after postmortem. The aggrieved locals attacked the houses of Utpal’s friend Monoj Ghosh, his uncles – Sadhan and Moloy one after another. The police however had already arrested Monoj on murder charges.
Bharat Ghosh, Utpal’s uncle said: “The unruly mass ran amok and led to the massacre despite of repeated urges to restrain by the elderly people and these all happened in front of the outnumbered policemen.” A police picketing was planted at the village soon after Utpal’s body was recovered, incidentally.
Utpal – a fish trader and Monoj – a farmer were friends since childhood. After Utpal’s marriage, the friends turned foe when unmarried Monoj allegedly started giving dirty proposal to Utpal’s wife time and again. A disgusted Utpal finally had lodged a complaint with the Galsi PS last year and the police accordingly had cautioned Monoj.
On Monday evening, two locals came to Utpal’s house for hiring a mini pump set. Utpal, according to the victim’s kin Shambhunath Pande: “Went out with them and didn’t return back home till late night, which was unusual.” In the early morning hours, the locals found Utpal’s beheaded body lying beside a pond and the police was informed.
After quizzing some of Utpal’s friends, Monoj was booked. He, according to the police, had grown ambition to marry Utpal’s widow after murdering his friend. The police said that with the help of two others, Monoj sliced Utpal’s head using an axe.
