KRISHNAGAR, 1 SEP: In a dramatic breakthrough in the Ishita Mallik murder case that has rocked Nadia district, police today arrested prime accused Deshraj Singh from near the Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh. Singh, who had been on the run since the brutal killing, was flown under escort to Kotwali police station this afternoon, officials confirmed.

The arrest comes less than 24 hours after Singh’s maternal uncle, Kuldeep Singh, was picked up from Jamnagar, Gujarat, late on Saturday morning. Kuldeep’s detention, investigators said, had added a crucial new dimension to the probe, as he is believed to have played an active role in sheltering Deshraj and facilitating his escape after the cold-blooded murder of 19-year-old Ishita.
Senior police sources indicated that leads obtained during Kuldeep’s interrogation helped the force track Deshraj’s movements and close in on him near the Indo-Nepal border. “His arrest marks a major breakthrough in the case,” an officer remarked, adding that further details will be disclosed after preliminary questioning.
More reports are awaited.
