KRISHNAGAR, 2 OCT: A tribal woman was allegedly kidnapped, gangraped and murdered before her body was found hanging from a tree, to suggest suicide. This brutal incident occurred at Nafarchandrapur, a remote fringe near Betai under Tehatta police station limits yesterday.
The police, however, initiated an UD case as no complaint has been lodged from the victim’s family till this evening, the BJP leadership have claimed it was a planned murder as the woman was their party worker in the locality.

“The woman was our party worker. As it was a far-reaching area and our party has domination, the Trinamul Congress has killed her to create panic among our party workers and supporters in the locality. We will lodge a complaint with the police after her cremation and we will treat the incident as post-poll violence,” said Arjun Biswas, the BJP’s Nadia North district president.
Mr Biswas said, “The woman left her house late at night after she received a call from someone. Since then she was missing till her body was found hanging from a tree near her house. The assailants were probably four to five persons and they kidnapped her soon after she left her house. They later gang raped her before murdering but did not stop at that. After killing her, they hanged the body from a tree to make it look like suicide.”
A team of BJP leadership today visited the area and talked with her family members and local residents.
Trinamul Congress leaders, however, brushed off the allegation saying that the woman had illicit relations with someone who probably committed the crime. No TMC workers are involved with this incident, the TMC leader said.

Local residents said the woman’s husband is currently working in Malaysia. Even her son was staying outside for his job and she used to live alone in her house. “She was called by someone over the phone and she was gangraped. She was later killed by the assailants to destroy evidence. But, we want a probe into this matter so that the reason behind the heinous crime is revealed and the culprits are punished,” said Buribala Sardar, a pradhan of Betai-I gram panchayat.

When asked, Ishani Paul, SP, Krishnagar Police District said, “Tehatta police has initiated an UD case and the body has been sent to the hospital for post-mortem.”
