KRISHNAGAR, 10 JUNE: A constable of Kolkata police sustained grievous bullet injuries in presence of his wife under mysterious circumstances after two unidentified youths riding a motorcycle shot at him from point blank range.
The incident occurred at Bara Andulia under Chapra police station limits in Nadia at around 9.30 pm last night.
The couple was then loitering in front of a petrol pump on the Krishnagar-Karimpur state highway as the victim came to his in-laws’ house to attend a funeral ceremony.
Police officials said Nilay Biswas, a Kolkata police constable posted in Barrackpore, sustained serious injuries in the attack and he was immediately taken to the Chapra hospital from where he was shifted to the Saktinagar district hospital in the night. Later, he was again referred to a Kolkata hospital as his condition was serious.
At Saktinagar hospital, Biswas told Hummingbird News that he and his wife were just loitering along the state highway after having meals. “All of a sudden two youths riding a motorcycle appeared in front of us. One of them attacked me with a sharp edged weapon. I tried to resist the attack, but another one shot at least two rounds from point blank range. One bullet hit my hand while another bullet touched away from my forehead,” Biswas, a resident of Raninagar under Palashipara police station limits in Nadia said.
Biswas’ wife said the two youths wore black clothes and they also kept their mouths covered. “We don’t know why the two youths attacked us. As it was night, I thought they suspected we were engaged in an illicit relationship. But, I repeatedly told them that we are husband-wife. But, they didn’t bother my words and attacked him,” she said.
When asked, Ishani Paul, SP, Krishnagar police district said, “The reason behind the attack has not been ascertained yet, but the preliminary probe suggests that it was a pre-planned attack. Personal enmity might be the possible reason for the attack.”
