BEHRAMPORE, 27 DEC: A small car, reportedly used as an ambulance, was washed away by the current of the Bhagirathi river leading to the death of a patient this afternoon, sources said adding the incident took place at Shaktipur ferry-ghat in Murshidabad district.
The car, a four-wheeler, sank into the river when its driver was trying to park it on a ferry-boat intending to cross the river but the ‘ambulance’ accidentally ran over the boat into the river and instantly disappeared under water with the patient and her attendants still seated inside the vehicle, eye-witnesses informed.
The boatman, however, claimed that the ferry-boat was not overcrowded. He said it was quite accidental that the car dropped into the river.
The patient, Sarathi Mondal (60) hailing from Gauripur village of Shaktipur area, underwent a backbone surgery in a hospital today and she could not move out of the sinking car while two of her attendants and the driver swam ashore and survived, it was learnt.
The police rushed to the spot and facilitated rescue operation with the help of a civil defense team, sources said adding the body was sent for post-mortem at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital at Behrampore this evening.
The rescue workers fished out the body of the woman hours after the incident. The car which was washed away by the river current was also recovered some distance away. The survivors’ health condition was stable, said officials.
