MIDNAPORE, 23 APRIL: Amidst the tension over the resurfacing of hand-written Maoist posters in Junglemahal area, a youth was shot at by unidentified goons at Fansitala on National Highway-6 in Jhargram this afternoon.
The miscreants looted his motorcycle and mobile phone before fleeing the scene. The youth was then rescued by the local residents and he was immediately taken to the Jhargram State General Hospital.
Police said the youth identified as Sudip Mahapatra was riding his motorcycle along the National Highway when two motorcycle-borne miscreants waylaid him from behind and asked him to hand over his bike to them. Whenever he denied, the miscreants, whose faces were covered with cloths, fired at his hip. They then tried to snatch the key of the motorcycle, but whenever he resisted they once again fired at his hip. He fell on the road and the miscreants fled the scene with his motorcycle and mobile phone.
Biswajit Ghosh, SP, Jhargram said, “We are investigating into this matter based on our findings. The youth is now out of danger. We will talk with him after his preliminary recovery and then it will be helpful to know who attacked him.”
Meanwhile, the intelligence officials had warned that Maoists would carry out an operation to snatch motorcycle from anyone and this motorcycle would be used for their purposes.
When asked about this intelligence input, Mr Ghosh said, “We are also probing into this matter based on this input.”
Meanwhile, the incident has triggered sensation among the locals. A Maoist poster was found at Manikpara market in Jhargram this morning. Warning the Trinamul Congress, the poster reads that the Trinamul has played with the people for so long and this time the Maoists will play with their leaders now.
