KALYANI, 6 OCT: Kalyani police have arrested a person and seized four firearms and five rounds of ammunition from his possession last night. The police conducted a raid at the house of one Sukumar Mondol of Dakshin Chandamari area as a part of special drive to prevent burglary, theft and group lash ahead of Durga puja.
The move is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and hassle-free Durga puja, a police officer said.
A senior police officer said Sukumar was accused in a murder case held in Kalyani in 2018. “Before puja festivities, we normally carry out raids at the houses of the accused persons for various crimes who are currently in bail. Accordingly, we conducted a raid at Mondol’s house and recovered such arms and ammunitions,” the senior police officer said.
This apart, police are going strong on the excise cases and nabbing the bootleggers and illegal firearm traders on a regular basis. The patrolling and picketing will be intensified and made more strategic at vantage points, as the festival season approaches, the police officer added.
