KOLKATA, 17 OCT: BJP MP from Asansol, Babul Supriya who recently joined Trinamul Congress on 18 September will meet the Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla on Tuesday and will tender his resignation as Lok Sabha MP.
He joined Trinamul Congress In presence of party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and party’s Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson DerekO’Brien at Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office.
Mr Supriya earlier went to Delhi to meet the Lok Sabha speaker but he was not available and finally he asked him to come on 19 October to tender his resignation.
Political analysts said “Trinamul is aiming at 2024 Lok Sabha poll and at this juncture inclusion of Babul Supriya is a significant move.”
Babul Supriya after joining Trinamul Congress told the reporters that he became disillusioned with BJP’s politics and so he declared to leave politics.
“But only four days ago when I met my friend Derek O’Brien regarding admission of my daughter to a school, he offered me to work for Bengal and I grab this opportunity to join Trinamul Congress and work along with Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for the development of Bengal,” said Mr Babul Supriya.
After Babul Supriya was stripped off his ministry, on 31 July, Babul Supriya declared that he would leave politics and will go back to his old world of music.
Mr Supriya was a two -time MP from Asansol in BJP ticket. He was made minister of state in 2014 and 2019 he was also made MoS of forest and environment.
But in 2021 Assembly poll he was asked by the BJP high command to contest from Tollygunge Assembly constituency and lost to the sitting Trinamul MLA and minister Aroop Biswas.
After Trinamul Congress’s landslide victory in West Bengal, BJP high command reshuffled the ministers and stripped off Babul Supriya of his ministerial berth.
At this move, Babul Supriya became very much upset and declared to leave politics He even turned down the request of BJP state president Dilip Ghosh to campaign for BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal in Bhwanipore.
Mr Supriya told the reporters, “In 2019,I expected at least I’ll be made an M oS with independent charge. But this was not done. You (read reporters) all know what power a minister of state has. But still, within my limited power, I did my best for the people of Asansol from where I am elected twice.”
In 2014 Lok Sabha poll, Prime Minister Narendra Modiji came to campaign for Babul Supriya in Asansol and said, ‘I want Babul in Parliament’.
