BANKURA, 5 APRIL: Yet another elephant was found dead in the Bankura forests today, which led to three deaths of the wild elephants in the district in past four weeks.
The corpse of a baby elephant was found lying deserted at the local Bhatpuskarni jungle within the Radhanagar forest Range in Sonamukhi here this morning. A three-member team of Veterinary experts examined the corpse and said that the baby elephant failed to bear with the soaring mercury and died of sun stroke. It was a six months baby, the Forest officials said.
After inquest, the Assistant Director of the district Animal Resources in Bankura, Sanjoy Seet said: “The baby elephant was suffering from a congenital hernia. The soaring heat intensified the problem and it died due to heat stroke.”
Two full grown elephants died at Piragoria and at Chuagara village on 6 March and 12 March due to electrocution – both in the Bankura (North) Forest Division.
Kalyan Rai, DFO said: “The previous two deaths had a definite reason resulted out of man – elephant conflict. But the death of baby elephant appears to be due to physical illness.”
