NEW DELHI, 22 FEB: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three prominent academic institutes, IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar and NIT Calicut, for the establishment of ‘BIS Standardization Chair Professor’. This initiative aims to institutionalize BIS’s engagement with eminent institutes of the country to secure active participation of academia in standards formulation and make teaching of Indian standards an integral part of the curriculum.

The BIS Standardization Chair Professor will focus on research and development, teaching and training in the field of standardization and conformity assessment in the country. The areas of focus will be Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Earthquake Engineering, Development and Management of water resources and renewable energy projects, Infrastructure Development, Medical Biotechnology & Nanotechnology, Biomaterials, and more. The initiative is expected to promote excellence and leadership in teaching and research & development in the field of science and various disciplines.
On the occasion, Mr Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General, BIS, expressed his views and stated that the MoUs with the academic institutes will strengthen and enhance the standards formulation activity. The initiative will also facilitate research & development projects and encourage involvement of young minds in the area of standardization process. Tiwari emphasized the need to engage with start-ups and incubation centers at academic institutions in the formulation of new standards and compliance with existing ones. He also expressed his anticipation that technology innovation and standards development shall be interwoven seamlessly to foster development.
The Officiating Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, the Director of IIT Gandhinagar, Prof Rajat Moona, and the Director of NIT Calicut, Prof Prasad Krishna, assured their commitment towards this initiative and agreed to take forward the collaboration with BIS.
This MoU will promote excellence in the field of standardization and conformity assessment in the country, as well as strengthen the relationship between academia and industry. The active participation of academia in standards formulation and making teaching of Indian standards an integral part of the curriculum will ensure that the country moves towards better quality control and standardization.
