KRISHNAGAR, 16 MAY: Dharma Mondol, a BJP worker, who was critically hacked by some Trinamul Congress workers at Hridaypur under Chapra police station limits in Nadia on 14 April succumbed to his injuries at NRS hospital in Kolkata today.
He was admitted to the Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnagar in serious condition, but later he was referred to the NRS hospital as his condition was deteriorating fast.
On hearing the death news, local BJP leader Chuni Chakraborty and others rushed to the house of the deceased and tried to console the bereaved family members.
The incident occurred during a political barb between two groups of youths inside a tea stall when some Trinamul Congress workers led by one Kalu Sheikh attacked him with a sharp edge weapon and hacked him critically.
Local residents said trouble broke out from a tea stall where the two groups were involved in political barbs when a large section of people in surrounding areas were observing Eid. Suddenly, one Kalu Sheikh and two others attacked them with sharp edge weapons. On hearing the incident, a large section of women came out from their houses and raised protest against the attack.
Later, police officials reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Vidisha Kalita, additional SP had said, “It was a stray incident. The police promptly took action soon after the incident erupted. Two persons of both the parties have been arrested till now and police officials are conducting raids to intercept the others involved in the incident.”
