KRISHNAGAR, 16 MARCH: A tragic incident occurred at Tilakpur in Nadia district on Thursday morning, where a 35-year-old woman was crushed to death and five others were injured when a portion of a brick kiln collapsed on them. The deceased has been identified as Sumita Devi (35) of Parhibari in Jharkhand. The injured were taken to the Chapra block hospital, and two of them are in critical condition, according to hospital sources.

The mishap occurred when a group of labourers entered the brick kiln chamber to re-arrange burnt brick blocks. During the process, one of the burnt brick-block walls suddenly collapsed on them, trapping six labourers under the huge burnt brick-block wall. While a few of them managed to come out, Sumita Devi died on the spot, and the rest were rescued with the help of locals and police.
The incident has caused tension in the locality, with some residents alleging that the brick kiln owner runs the kiln illegally in connivance with police and local Trinamul Congress leaders. They claim that most of the labourers are from outside the state, and the owner does not have any ‘letter of concern’ from the district administration. However, the brick kiln owner was not available for comment.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety of labourers working in brick kilns, and the authorities have been urged to take necessary steps to prevent such mishaps in the future.
