KRISHNAGAR, 6 SEP: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan committed suicide on Thuesday afternoon by shooting himself with his service Insas rifle in his camp at Nafarchandrapur under Tehatta police station limits in Nadia.
The jawan was identified as Sanjay Patel (34), a resident of Gujarat. Patel shot himself at an 84 Bn BSF camp located at Nafarchandrapur bordering to Bangladesh in Nadia district.
On Tuesday afternoon, other BSF jawans posted at the camp suddenly heard a firing sound within the campus and rushed to the spot. They found Patel lying on the ground and profusely bleeding while his service rifle was found beside his body.
It is being suspected that he shot himself from his Insas rifle. Though Patel was immediately rushed to the nearby Tehatta Sub-divisional Hospital, he was declared brought dead. His body was later taken to the Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnagar for autopsy.
Police as well as Patel’s colleagues suspect that the jawan might have taken the extreme step out of mental depression. However, the exact reason behind his depression could not be confirmed.
Earlier in August, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan opened indiscriminate fire with his AK-47 rifle in Kolkata. His colleague was killed while another was critically injured in the firing. The CISF trooper was reportedly in mental depression as he was denied leave for a long time.
Similarly in June this year in Kolkata, a police constable, deputed for the security of Bangladesh Deputy High Commission at Park Circus, opened fire with his Insas rifle, leaving a woman dead. The constable then committed suicide by shooting himself too.
