Mr Surajit Singh Guleria, DIG, BSF said the operation was carried out on the basis of “specific and credible intelligence” about a possible smuggling attempt through the Banpur corridor. Acting on the tip-off, jawans of the 32nd Battalion under the South Bengal Frontier, enhanced surveillance on 4 December and laid an ambush along the suspected route.

“During the operation, our troops noticed a suspicious man moving from the border road towards Banpur village. When challenged, he attempted to escape. However, our alert jawans chased him down and detained him,” he said.

A search of the detainee led to the recovery of 36 gold biscuits wrapped in packets, which were immediately seized. The arrested smuggler and the confiscated gold were later handed over to the concerned agencies for further legal proceedings.

The BSF South Bengal Frontier spokesperson Mr Guleria praised the alertness of the personnel, saying, “Our troops remain fully committed to preventing illegal activities such as gold smuggling. Their swift and effective action has once again thwarted a major attempt this month.”

This is the third major anti-smuggling success reported by the South Bengal Frontier in December, strengthening BSF’s continued efforts to clamp down on illicit transborder networks, Mr Guleria added.
