KRISHNAGAR, 11 SEP: The CBI officials, who are conducting probe into the post-poll violence at Chapra in Nadia, have taken two more people in their custody yesterday. In addition to this, the CBI officials also appealed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Krishnagar seeking custody of one Kalu Sheikh and Bivas Biswas who were in their custody for three days for more four days. But, the magistrate on hearing pleas remanded them in CBI custody for further two days.
Yesterday, the CBI officials appealed before the court seeking custody of one Kinkar Biswas and Sagar Sheikh for five days but the magistrate remanded them in CBI custody for four days, said Tamij Uddin Sheikh, a defence lawyer.
Kinkar and Sagar, both Trinamul Congress workers in Hridaypur village were not named in the FIR, but their names appeared in the chargesheet filed by the Chapra police in connection with the murder of one BJP worker Dharma Mandal on 14 May.
In this case, the Chapra police had submitted a chargesheet against 23 people while they arrested eight persons. Later, the CBI took over the charge to conduct investigation and they re-registered the case and started reinvestigation. They arrested two persons and five persons have surrendered before the court so far, said Tamij Uddin Sheikh, a defence lawyer. Among the surrendered persons, the CBI officials today appealed before the court seeking one Kalu Sheikh and Bivas Biswas in their custody, said Mr Tamij Uddin.
During the arrest the CBI officials had faced stiff resistance from the villagers as they were carrying out searches at various locations. The angered villagers had thrown mud before the officials and ransacked one of their vehicles. They also punctured the tyres of the vehicle. Later, Chapra police and CRPF jawans on hearing the incident reached the site and rescued the CBI officials.
A day after this incident, panic spread in the locality and among the persons who are hiding since the incident occurred; one Bijay Ghosh and Ashima Ghosh, both are TMC panchayat members of Hridaypur gram panchayat surrendered before the court.
Mandal was brutally attacked by a group of local residents on 14 May and he succumbed to his injuries on 16 May in a Kolkata hospital.
