KRISHNAGAR, 13 APRIL: A day after Calcutta High Court ordered Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe Hanshkhali rape and death of a minor girl case, a three-member team of the central probe agency reached Hanshkhali tonight.
According to CBI sources, the CBI officials emailed to SP, Ranaghat Police District asking him to handover the FIR copies to the central agency.
The central agency has already initiated a case with several sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO act. It has been learnt that the CBI has initiated a case under 302/ 376 (D)/201 and 34 of IPC and 6 POCSO act.
“A team has been formed to probe the incident and will visit the place. Two arrested will be quizzed. The team will meet the family of the deceased girl and will get the details of who had threatened them and also why the body was cremated without any death certificate and post mortem. The CBI officials will also try to collect evidence (if any),” said the CBI sources.
The CBI sources also confirmed that DIG CBI Akhilesh Singh will visit Hanskhali on Thursday.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered a CBI probe into the Hanshkhali rape case.
In its detailed order, the HC noted that in order to have a ‘fair investigation’ and instill confidence in the family of the victim, the case was being handed over to the CBI. The state investigating agency has been asked to hand over all papers relating to the investigation, as well as the custody of the accused to the central agency. The matter has been listed for 2 May.
As alleged, the girl was invited to a birthday party of the son of a local Trinamul Congress panchayat leader. The youth with four-five friends allegedly gang raped the minor girl.
The girl later died due to excessive bleeding. The family members were allegedly prevented from taking her to any hospital for treatment. It has been alleged that the family was threatened, and police initially refused to register a report. With an NGO’s intervention, the report was registered after five days.
Notably, chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s victim-blaming comments drew the ire of political parties and locals as she questioned the victim: “Was she raped? Was she pregnant or had a love affair?”
