MIDNAPORE, 22 MAY: In view of potential threats to the parliamentarians, the Centre has provided Y+ security cover to Sisir Adhikari and Dibyendu Adhikari.
The Centre approved the security cover after taking into cognisance a report prepared by central security agencies and the inputs of a high-level team of officers that was sent to the state by the ministry in the wake of post-poll violence against the workers of the BJP.
Sisir is father of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari while Dibyendu is latter’s brother.
Sisir Adhikari defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the ruling Trinamul Congress (TMC) ahead of the March-April elections in the state. Suvedu Adhikari also switched over to the BJP and defeated chief minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram even as the TMC swept back to power by winning 213 out of 292 seats. His brother, Dibyendu Adhikari, is still with the TMC. Soumendu Adhikari, Sisir Adhikari’s third son, has also joined the BJP.
Earlier this month, the MHA provided central security to all 77 newly elected BJP MLAs in West Bengal. The decision to provide central security cover was in view of potential threats to the legislators.
Three to five armed commandoes are provided to a protected person under the X category.
In case of Y+ security, it would comprise anywhere between 11-16 security personnel drawn from the CRPF depending on the threat assessment, said an official.
Suvendu Adhikari has the second highest Z category security cover from the CRPF with a bulletproof vehicle.
