KOLKATA, 7 JAN: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday sought to take credit for a healthcare facility that was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata at a virtual event. She claimed that the Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Institute (CNRI) that PM Modi inaugurated today had already been thrown open for public by her government months ago.
“I have come to the programme because of the Prime Minister. Because Pradhan Mantri ji is virtually inaugurating this project. The Honourable Health Minister had telephoned me twice. This is why I thought this is a Kolkata programme in which the Prime Minister has taken an interest,” Miss Banerjee said.
Talking at the virtual programme, Miss Banerjee said, “I am extremely happy that CNCI’s new campus is being inaugurated, I have a special bond with this institute as it was situated right opposite my college. Health is state subject, but the Centre and State government must work together to better the lives of people of Bengal.”
She said, “The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tata Cancer Hospital in Mumbai, to open two new cancer centres of excellence in Kolkata and Siliguri
West Bengal government has also set up 43 new multi-specialty hospitals across the state, including a 300-bed facility for paediatric patients.”
“The state government has inaugurated 16 mother-child hubs in the state, and has made sure that institutional delivery in Bengal is over 99%. It was a lowly 60% when we had come to power in 2011,” she added.
Miss Banerjee further said, “We have ensured through our works that our country won’t get a bad reputation. Polio has been eradicated from the state. We have also started various schemes like Swasthya Sathi, where Rs 5 lakh medical insurance is given to each and every person in the state.”
“Our fair price medicine centres give over 40% concession on medicines for everyone. Bengal is no. 1 when it comes to vaccination. There is zero wastage of vaccines. We have also started vaccinating children in the age-group of 15-18 years in schools and colleges. However, we still require more vaccines from the Centre for the second dose, and then only can we think about the booster shots,” Miss Banerjee said.
Moments after Mamata’s remark, BJP leader Amit Malviya tweeted a video clip showing Mamata speaking at the event and countered her saying,”Mamata Banerjee is incorrigible. Notwithstanding the fact that she is on path of constant, needless confrontation, she must realise that inaugurating a building as Covid facility is NOT the same as inaugurating a Cancer facility in a hospital. Imagine what Bengal has to suffer!”
“Mamata Banerjee has no regard for details, comes unprepared for meetings with the PM. She refers to mortality as comorbidity and thinks she is making an intelligent point. Similarly, Bengal has all the vaccine it needs to inoculate people but it has failed spectacularly to do so,” he said in another tweet.
