KRISHNAGAR, 21 OCT: The CBI officials, who are conducting probe into the post-poll violence case at Chapra in Nadia, have arrested one Apu Mandal, nephew of the victim Dharma Mandal from his sister’s house at Bogula under Hanshkhali police station limits in Nadia last night.
The CBI officials today produced him before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Krishnagar District Judge’s Court and the magistrate on hearing pleas remanded him in CBI custody for four days. He will again be produced on 25 October.
In this case, the Chapra police had submitted a chargesheet against 23 people while they arrested eight persons. Later, the CBI took over the charge to conduct investigation and they re-registered the case and started reinvestigation. “They have arrested three persons and eight persons have surrendered before the court so far,” said Tamij Uddin Sheikh, a defence lawyer.
Dharma Mandal, a BJP worker was brutally attacked by a group of local residents on 14 May and he succumbed to his injuries on 16 May in a Kolkata hospital.
During the arrest the CBI officials had faced stiff resistance from the villagers as they were carrying out searches at various locations. The angered villagers had thrown mud before the officials and ransacked one of their vehicles. They also punctured the tyres of the vehicle. Later, Chapra police and CRPF jawans on hearing the incident reached the site and rescued the CBI officials.
