BEHRAMPORE, 14 DEC: It’s Behrampore town at midnight when four persons of a family including an aged couple were allegedly beaten up and hacked at random. The injured, hailing from Saidabad area of Behrampore municipality in Murshidabad district, are now struggling for life at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, sources said. The police today launched an inquiry into the matter.
Paresh Chowdhury and his wife, Champa Chowdhury alleged that their son, Pankaj and son-in-law, Subhra protested when some youths in drunken state were uttering slangs in front of the house belonging to the Chowdhury family. The tipplers, purportedly enraged at the protest, assaulted the wife of Pankaj, it was alleged.
The police were called in and the tipplers’ gang fled as the police reached the spot. The criminal gang, said Chowdhury family members, returned soon after the police left. The gang on comeback allegedly stormed into the victims’ house, ransacked chattels inside and attacked the inmates with sharp-cutting weapons.
The elderly couple sustained injuries at legs, spine and head, said Subrata Moitra, the BJP MLA from Behrampore. “In recent years I have not seen such dastardly attack on innocent residents of Behrampore. Some drunkards came, went on rampage in the house and started hacking the family members”, the MLA said.
Their son, Pankaj Chowdhury is a Toto driver by profession. He alleged that the criminal gang attacked him with sharp cutting weapons. Sources informed that the attackers were local youths who picked up a quarrel with the victims at a marriage party of the locality leading to the midnight attack, said local residents.
Subhra Chowdhury, wife of Pankaj, alleged, “Close to our house, they (the accused) were uttering abusive words. When I protested, they assaulted me. They all were in drunken state.”
The incident has created a sort of sensation in the locality because the spot where the incident occurred is located close to the tourist spot of century-old Armenian Church at Saidabad area of Behrampore town, sources said.
