ECI announces poll dates for Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA, 26 FEB: The much-awaited poll schedule for five upcoming assembly elections in the country – Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry has been announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) today.

While Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will have elections in a single phase, polls will be held in Assam in three phases. West Bengal, however, will have elections in eight phases, the longest phases ever in the state.

As many as 824 constituencies will go to polls. Polls are to be held for 294 seats in West Bengal, 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, 140 seats in Kerala, 126 seats in Assam and 30 seats in Puducherry. 

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that as many as 18.68 crore electors will cast their votes at 2.7 lakh polling stations in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.

In West Bengal : The first phase will be held on 27 March and the final phase will be conducted on 29 April. The poll panel will announce the West Bengal Assembly Election Results 2021 on 2 May, 2021.

The first phase of the West Bengal election will see 30 Assembly seats going to polls, in second phase 30 constituencies, in third 31 segments, in fourth phase 44, in fifth phase 45 seats, in the sixth phase 43 will go to polls, in seventh phase 35 constituencies, and the final round will see political parties fighting it out for 35 Assembly segments.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora Election Commission said that the poll panel will appoint two special observers for West Bengal and a third can also be sent if required.

There are 294 constituencies in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The rem of the present Assembly ends on May 30, 2021. Sixty-eight Assembly segments have reserved for Schedules Castes and 16 for Schedules Tribes.

In 2016, the Trinamul Congress retained power by winning 211 constituencies.
