KOLKATA, 24 FEB: Enforcement Directorate (ED), the premier law enforcement agency responsible for investigating economic offences, is expanding its office space and adding additional infrastructure in its existing facilities at Central Government Office (CGO) complex at Salt Lake in northern Kolkata.
The move comes in the wake of the agency’s involvement in many high-profile cases in West Bengal, leading to increased work pressure and staff strength.
Currently, the agency has two facilities in two separate buildings within the CGO complex. However, due to the rise in high-profile investigations, there has been an increase in the staff strength at these two offices. Investigating officers have to take high-profile persons into custody for questioning, and for that purpose, they are required to set up makeshift lockups in the existing facilities, causing immense inconvenience.
To address this issue, the ED authorities have decided to occupy the space vacated by National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation, whose majority staff has moved to the organisation’s own office elsewhere in Salt Lake. This new space will be renovated to set up lockups for housing those detained by the ED sleuths for the purpose of interrogation.
In addition, all the facilities of the agency within the CGO complex will be under strict surveillance of multiple CCTVs in each facility to ensure maximum security.
ED sleuths are currently involved in the investigation of a number of high-profile cases, including teacher’s recruitment scam, coal smuggling scam, cattle smuggling scam, hawala scam, and chit fund scams. The agency anticipates an increase in its activities in the coming days and expects additional staff to join the Salt Lake facilities. Hence, the agency has decided to add to its office space.
The move is expected to facilitate smoother operations of the agency and provide a more conducive environment for investigations.
