KRISHNAGAR, 23 OCT: A massive piece of false ceiling along with the cross beam of the heritage Krishnagar Circuit House collapsed on Saturday around 3 pm leaving a security person injured.
The incident occurred when two election commission observers who were accommodated in this heritage guest house for the Santipur by-election, were in Santipur to observe the election campaigns.

The injured security person named Debashish Mondol was immediately taken to the hospital, but he was later released after giving first aid.
On hearing the incident, district magistrate Shashank Sethi and other government officials including PWD officials rushed to the site and started inspecting the incident.

The journalists who were also informed about the incident rushed to the Circuit House, but they were prevented from entering the premises. A hot altercation ensued with the security persons, but the journalists put pressure on the officials who finally allowed them to reach the site.
The incident has raised serious safety concerns of ministers and officials who use the premises to stay and hold meetings. It also led to panic among officials and the staff of the guest house.
The Old Circuit House building which was built about a century ago was renovated in 2019 and the chief minister Mamata Banerjee had inaugurated the building on 5 February, 2020.

“The wooden cross-beam which was century-old collapsed on the false ceiling which was basically repaired three years ago. During the renovation, it was hard to understand that the wooden cross beam became feeble. Termites or insects have damaged the wooden cross beam which ultimately collapsed. I was not here during the renovation, but we have started inspecting the extent of structural damages, “said Abhijit Sarkar, assistant engineer, PWD.
