KRISHNAGAR, 28 OCT: In a tragic incident, five persons of a same family, including two children, were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck at Tinchara near Bethuadahari Toll Plaza under Nakashipara police station limits in Nadia this morning.
Police officials said all the five persons who got trapped inside the car died on the spot. The victims were taken to the local hospital where the doctor pronounced them brought dead.
Police said the dead have been identified as Parul Roy (65), Bidyut Roy (48), Ayush Roy (8), Arka Karna Roy (11) and Mukul Sarkar (55). They were all residents of Kalibari, Jamtala of Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur.
According to the police, both the boys were brothers, one was 8-year-old while the other one was 11-year-old. While their father was driving the vehicle, their grandmother and a relative were also in the vehicle.
“They were going to a relative’s house at Bethuadahari from Raiganj. The accident occurred at around 7am. The truck, which was speeding towards Behrampur, collided head on with the car at the junction where the double lane National Highway-12 converged to a single lane,” said a police officer.
The car was badly damaged and both vehicles fell into a roadside ditch after breaking the guard-wall. Local residents rushed to the site and tried to rescue the victims. But, until a crane reached there, no victims were rescued.
On hearing the incident, Mrs Ishani Paul, SP, Krishnagar Police District and Akshat Garg, Additional SP (Head Quarters) reached there and they monitored the rescue operation.
Later, Mrs Paul said, “We are conducting investigation to find out why the incident occurred. This apart, we will take necessary measures related with the incident. We will also talk with the NH officials and it is apparent that due to diversion of the road, the accident took place.”
The driver and helper of the truck were absconding.
