Flyovers to be built in both ends of Burdwan town to augment NH-19

BURDWAN, 30 APRIL: A number of flyovers are planned to be erected in the eastern and western ends of Burdwan town as part of augmentation of the National Highway and the Burdwan Development Authority- a state backed statutory body has geared up machineries for the purpose to accommodate the refurbishment of the infrastructure.

“Two flyovers will penetrate substantial length deeper into the town’s core area and will facilitate an upgraded traffic movement significantly, as the impression was projected by the Highway authorities,” said Ainul Haq, Vice Chairman of the Burdwan Development Authority.

He added: “We had a joint discussion with the National Highway Authority of India in connection with the proposed development today where the elevations were discussed at length.” Kakoli Gupta Ta, Chairperson, BDA said: “They raised certain issues relating to some perennial crisis and we’ve assured them about effective cooperation.”

The NHAI authority already has kicked off a Rs 4215 crore World Bank funded six-laning work from Panagarh to Dankuni stretch of the NH 19 (formerly known as NH 2). Certain infrastructural refurbishment of towns situated beside the highway like Burdwan have also been taken into the account. An official with the NHAI said: “Considering the difficulties faced by the residents beside the highway, the authorities have designed a number of flyovers, underpasses, truck-bays and service roads this time.”

The NHAI today began dismantling of unauthorized structures between Panagarh-Burdwan stretch. R P Singh, Chief General Manager, NHAI’s Kolkata Project Office said: “We are going to overhaul the present road. We are dedicated to complete the work by two and a half years.”

Currently, the highway has just 7 underpasses between Panagarh and Palsit stretch, which, according to the newly augmented design, will have 41 underpasses, the officials said.
