Former Union minister Satyabrata Mookherjee passes away at 91

KRISHNAGAR, 3 MARCH: Former Union Minister and the ex-president of West Bengal BJP, Satyabrata Mookherjee passed away at his residence in Kolkata on Friday following a prolonged illness. The 91-year-old politician was suffering from old-age-related ailments for quite some time, as confirmed by a party official.

Mookherjee was popular among leaders across party lines for his amicable nature and philanthropic activities. He was elected from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency on BJP ticket in 1999. He was also an additional solicitor general of India before entering politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over Mookherjee’s death, tweeting, “Pained by the passing away of former Union Minister Shri Satyabrata Mookherjee. He played a vital role in building the BJP in West Bengal. He was respected for his legal acumen as well as intellectual prowess. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti.”

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also expressed grief over the loss of the veteran politician. “I am disheartened about the sad demise of former @BJP4Bengal President Shri Satyabrata Mukherjee. Popularly known as Jolu Babu, he was an MP & Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Govt. Condolences to his family members & friends. May his soul attain eternal peace. Om Shanti,” Adhikari tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her condolences in a statement, saying, “I am deeply saddened at the demise of high profile barrister and former Union Minister Satyabrata Mukherjee, who was known as Julu Babu. I express my heartfelt empathy for the bereaved family. I am disheartened about the sad demise of Mukherjee.”

In the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, Mookherjee was the Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers from September 2000 to June 2002, and then for Commerce and Industry from July 2002 to October 2003. He was the president of the BJP’s West Bengal unit from 2008 until October 2009 when he was replaced by Rahul Sinha.

Mookherjee’s demise is a loss for the political fraternity, and his contributions to the development of West Bengal will be remembered.
