NORTH 24 PARGANAS, 17 MAR: In a major crackdown, the Border Security Force (BSF) under South Bengal Frontier seized 40 gold biscuits worth Rs 2.42 crore from an alleged smuggler who was trying to transfer the gold from Bangladesh to India from West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.
The weight of the gold biscuit that was recovered is 4.6 kg and it was valued at about Rs 2,42,36,856, according to a statement.
A suspicious movement of the accused was traced by the troops of the Border Out Post, Dobarpara, 158 Battalion at around 7:45 am.
When a jawan challenged him asking to come to a halt, the smuggler threw his bag and iron dagger before escaping to Bangladesh, taking advantage of the deep foliage and the Ichhamati river.
Senior cops arrived at the scene and 40 gold biscuits were discovered inside the bag, a BSF statement mentioned.
It also said that the seized gold biscuits have been handed over to Customs Office at Petrapole for further legal proceedings.
The Public Relations Officer and DIG of the South Bengal Frontier, Surjeet Singh Guleria said that the BSF took “strict steps to stop smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border.”
Mr Guleria also said that the smugglers would not be spared as “troops are given proper training in every modus operandi of the smugglers.”
