KOLKATA, 28 MAR: West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is on a scheduled five-day visit to North Bengal, interacted with locals in Darjeeling on Monday. Miss Banerjee was seen coddling a toddler, while interacting with the local residents of the area during her stroll in the Hills.
Her visit to North Bengal is of significant importance as the CM on Monday held meetings with representatives of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha. She also called for polls to establish a three-tier Panchayat system and a new GTA body in the Hills.
“I want the GTA polls to be held in May-June,” the CM said, while briefing the media. “We also want the rural body polls there, but there are two-tier rural bodies existing (gram panchayat and panchayat samiti) in the Hills. We have requested the Centre to implement the three-tier rural body system, so that we can hold the three-tier rural body polls in the Hills,” Miss Banerjee said.
She said both Trinamul y and Gorkha Prajatsntrik Morcha agreed readily on the proposals while, GJM Roshan Giri wanted some clarifications bid.
Following Trinamul’s landslide victory in the civic polls in North Bengal, CM Banerjee had assured the people of Siliguri that she would return to the region as winning the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad elections is her party’s next target.
On Sunday, Miss Banerjee attended a programme in Siliguri, where she spoke about the social welfare schemes of her government. The Chief Minister will be visiting Uttarkanya on 31 March before leaving for Kolkata the next day.
