MIDNAPORE, 15 JULY: In a remarkable turn of events, the fishing community in Digha is rejoicing as the first large quantity of Hilsa for the season was caught in their nets. A whopping 40 tons of Hilsa flooded the Digha Mohana market on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the local fishermen. This abundant catch has brought smiles to the faces of fishermen, traders, and trawler-launch owners alike, as they anticipate a prosperous fishing season ahead.
The arrival of the much-awaited Hilsa fish has created a buzz at the Digha estuary auction center and market. The clamor of fishmongers resounded through the market, creating an atmosphere unlike any other day. So far, approximately 60-70 trawlers have returned from the sea with such a bounty of Hilsa. Remaining trawler-launches remain out at sea, with fishermen hopeful of finding even more Hilsa upon their return.
The recent drizzling rains and fresh winds have created favorable conditions for Hilsa netting, contributing to this remarkable haul. This season began on 14 June, and within just one month, the largest quantity of Hilsa has already been caught. Trawler-launch owners are optimistic that with such favorable weather conditions prevailing, the supply of Hilsa will increase significantly in the coming days.
According to sources from the Mohana Bazaar, the Hilsa being sold weighs between 500-700 grams, and is priced between Rs 500 to Rs 600 per kilogram. Hilsa weighing between 800 to 1,000 grams fetches a higher price, ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,100 per kilogram. The larger Hilsa weighing over 1,100 grams is priced at Rs 1,250 per kilogram. Despite the increased supply, the prices have not decreased significantly. However, as the supply continues to increase, it is anticipated that prices will become more affordable for the general public.
Biplab Maity, a local fisherman, expressed his excitement, mentioning that all the Hilsa caught that day had made their way to the estuary market. Not only were their numbers significant, but their size was also commendable. The remaining trawler-launches are expected to bring in more Hilsa, and fishermen hope that this will further stabilize prices, making them accessible to all.
Shyamsunder Das, the secretary of the Digha Fishermen and Fish Traders Association, reflected on the challenges faced by fishermen in the past few years, where they struggled to obtain an adequate Hilsa supply. During those times, they had to rely on other fish, including pomfret. However, with the current surge in Hilsa catch, Das believes there is a ray of hope for the remainder of the season, with expectations of increasing supply.
With the continuous increase in supply, it is hoped that hilsa prices will become more affordable, allowing everyone to savor this much-loved delicacy, Das added.
