A senior police officer said the woman named as Tina Thakur (29) was found dead in her husband’s house. Her body has been sent to the Saktinagar district hospital for autopsy.

“A preliminary investigation suggests that it was not a case of suicide. She was probably smothered to death when she was sleeping,” a police officer said.

Debashish Das, the victim’s brother alleged that her husband Palash Thakur used to beat her often on the suspicion that she had an extramarital affair. The couple has two sons and they married around 13 years ago. “Since the last many years, her husband often used to beat him and they often used to involve in quarrel. Yesterday, he beat her up also due to the same suspicion. This morning, they informed us that my elder sister has committed suicide by hanging. But, when we reach there and saw the dead body, we realised that they have killed my sister,” Debashish said.

A complaint has been lodged against Palash Thakur and his family members for killing the woman with the Palashipara police where they mentioned that the woman was smothered to death with the help of a pillow.
