MIDNAPORE, 19 JAN: A huge cache of arms and ammunition was found buried in the ground at Bardanga village of Nalbona gram-panchayat under Goaltore police station limits in West Midnapore today.
The arms and ammunition were found in a packet wrapped with plastic papers when the labourers were digging earth for construction of a road under 100 days’ work.
Later, the locals informed the police who immediately reached the site and recovered another five packets after digging the earth further.
Mr Dinesh Kumar, SP, West Midnapore said, “Approx 36 firearms and 400 to 450 pieces of ammunition have been recovered from under earth.”
A senior police officer said, “It seems that these firearms and bullets were buried several years ago. The firearms are also damaged. We have seized them and are looking into the matter.”
Trinamul Congress leaders alleged that the CPI-M local ‘goons’ had kept these arms and ammunition under the ground during their regime. This recovery proves that they had used these firearms against the opposition party.
The CPI-M leaders, however, brushed aside the allegation saying that they had no connection with these firearms. The ruling Trinamul is trying to defame the party to cover up their misdeeds.
