IIT Guwahati celebrates 26th convocation with 2150 graduates and prestigious awards

GUWAHATI, 14 JULY: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) celebrated its 26th Convocation Ceremony today, marking a significant milestone with 2150 students receiving their degrees across various disciplines. The graduating cohort included 1682 male and 468 female students.

Among the notable awardees, Vedant Gaurang Shah, B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, was honored with the President of India Gold Medal for achieving the highest score in the B.Tech/B.Des batch. Rethyam Gupta, B.Tech. in Engineering Physics, received the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Arpita Ray, M.Tech. in Geotechnical Engineering, was awarded the Governor of Assam PG Gold Medal, and Pranshu Kandoi, B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, received the Governor of Assam UG Gold Medal.

The ceremony was graced by Padma Shri awardee Dr. Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, as the Chief Guest. Prof. Gautam Barua, Former Director of IIT Guwahati, attended as the Guest of Honor. The event was presided over virtually by Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, Chairman, Board of Governors, and featured a welcome address by Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, Acting Chairperson, Board of Governors.

Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, presented the Convocation Report, highlighting the institute’s achievements and ongoing initiatives. He expressed pride in the graduates’ accomplishments, stating, “We are proud to celebrate IIT Guwahati’s 26th Convocation. This milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of our graduating students, who have excelled in their academic and research pursuits.”

Prof. Jalihal emphasized the institute’s recognition in several prestigious rankings, including the NIRF 2023, Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, Nature 2024, and QS World University Rankings 2025. He noted the institute’s commitment to excellence and innovation through its 11 departments, 9 academic centers, 5 academic schools, and the AAHII Hospital.

In his Convocation address, Dr. Sridhar Vembu congratulated the graduates and shared insights from his journey. He encouraged the students to embrace challenges and focus on innovation, stating, “Indigenizing technology starts with proactively addressing immediate challenges. Embrace challenges—they not only test and refine your strengths but also spark breakthroughs that drive significant progress.”

Prof. Gautam Barua, Guest of Honor, also extended his congratulations, urging the graduates to explore diverse areas of interest and deepen their expertise. He highlighted the importance of sustaining growth and excellence at IITs, preserving the institute’s rich culture and supportive environment.

IIT Guwahati, recognized as one of the world’s top institutes, continues to advance in interdisciplinary research and technology development. The institute is actively implementing NEP 2020 policies, fostering a start-up culture, promoting entrepreneurship, and creating jobs in the Northeast.

The institute’s notable projects include the “Digital Nerve Center,” in partnership with the National Health Mission Assam, TATA Medical & Diagnostics, and the Gates Foundation, aimed at transforming the healthcare delivery system in the northeast. Additionally, IIT Guwahati has partnered with the state government to facilitate training and mentoring programs for school teachers and students, with over 100,000 students participating in a mega Science and Maths Olympiad.

With 698 ongoing research and consultancy projects valued at approximately Rs. 389 crores, and 473 new projects initiated with a sanctioned value of Rs. 145 crores, IIT Guwahati remains at the forefront of innovation. The institute has also launched India’s largest Remote Pilot Training Organization (RPTO) for drone technology services and education, and a three-month training program for defense personnel.

Nationally and internationally recognized, IIT Guwahati ranks 7th among India’s best engineering institutions and 9th in the ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ categories in the India Rankings 2023 by the NIRF. Its subjects in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering are ranked among the top 100 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024.
