GUWAHATI, 30 NOV: In a pioneering move, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has unveiled a three-month training program on Drone Technology for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks Officers (OR) with plans for future extensions. This initiative, implemented by the Centre for Educational Technology (CET), Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems (CICPS), Centre for Drone Technology, and IIT Guwahati Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF), aims to modernize armed forces operations, provide cutting-edge skills for drone operations, and facilitate a smooth transition for personnel considering post-retirement careers in the rapidly expanding drone technology sector.

The primary objective of this program is to equip armed forces officers with state-of-the-art skills in drone technologies, pilot training, software operations, and applications. Professor Parameswar K. Iyer, Centre for Drone Technology and Dean, PRBR, IIT Guwahati, emphasized the institution’s commitment to engaging with the armed forces to augment them with niche technologies. The program, he stated, is designed to revolutionize various operational activities within the armed forces.

IIT Guwahati is offering a certificate program on Drone Technology-related courses to the defense forces for the first time in the country. According to Professor T. V. Bharat, Head, Centre for Educational Technology, this initiative aims to skill the armed forces with upcoming technology and boost their career opportunities post-retirement, especially for senior officers. The program, crafted by faculty from different departments and centers, provides participants with opportunities as entrepreneurs or in technology-based second careers.

The program’s curriculum is carefully crafted to cover both fundamental and practical aspects of drone technology and operations. The theoretical part includes courses on Maths and Computing Foundation, Drone Technology, Electrical, Electronics & Mechanical Engineering, and Applied Engineering. The practical part involves hands-on training using Flight Simulators, Basic Assembly, Risk Assessment & Analysis, Drone Equipment Maintenance, Payload Installation and Utilization, Intro to Drone Data & Analysis, Robotics, 3D Printing, Practical Flying with Instructor, and Solo Flying.

Brigadier Rajeev Kapur, SM, Assistant Director General of the Directorate General of Resettlement (DRZ), highlighted the course’s importance in enabling a smooth transition for service personnel seeking second careers after retirement. The program not only expands their knowledge of Drone Technology but also provides insights into the civil domain and the corporate world’s working environment.

Mr. A. Kumar of the Indian Air Force shared his positive experience attending the Drone Technology Training program at IIT Guwahati. He praised the educational environment, describing it as both informative and pleasant.

The current batch of the Drone Technology Program comprises 30 personnel from various armed forces, marking a significant step towards enhancing the armed forces’ capabilities in emerging technologies. As the program progresses, it is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of armed forces personnel in the rapidly evolving field of drone technology.
