KOLKATA, 2 JAN: After 75 years of independence, for the first time, the inmates of Ghoramara will first have electricity in their island.
Ghoramara,is an isolated island off Sagar island. So when grid electricity reached Sagar island, Ghoramara inmates were not benefitted by the grid connectivity.

At present there are 5,000 inmates in Ghoramara island. Though it has a higher secondary school, post office and panchayat office, it does not have access to power till now.
Come 2022, IIT Kharagpur and CMERI Durgapur will set up a 250 kilowatt (kw) solar power station in Ghoramara and the total cost of the project is Rs 4.5 crore. The entire funding will be done by Department of Science and Technology, said Dr SP Gon Chowdhury, chairman to the technical advisory committee.
Dr Gon Chowdhury said every household will be connected with solar grid connection and can use both light and fan.
He also said, an overhead water tank would be set up and piped drinking water be supplied to every household.
He said that island will also have an electric charging station to charge the toto rickshaws. A solar powered boat will also be there to ferry people from the island to Sagar or to the mainland.
Mr Gon Chowdhury said, Rs 5 will be charged per unit per household.
He said IIT will run it for three years after completion and later it will be handed over to a society that will be formed locally.
