KHARAGPUR, 13 SEP: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has ushered in a pioneering chapter in the realm of education by commencing admissions for its unique four-year Integrated B.Sc-B.Ed (Secondary Stage) program under the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) for the academic session 2023-24. This distinctive program, in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, is set to redefine teacher education in India and nurture the next generation of educators.
The ITEP program at IIT Kharagpur is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field of education while concurrently gaining expertise in one of four disciplines: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Economics. As per the program’s structure, students will be assigned their disciplinary majors based on their performance in the National Common Entrance Test (NCET).
Speaking about this groundbreaking initiative, Prof. V K Tewari, Director of IIT Kharagpur, highlighted the institution’s commitment to expanding its academic horizons. He stated, “With time, IIT Kharagpur has expanded its ambit from offering Engineering to Sciences, Management, Law, Medical Science, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Financial Engineering, and Humanities and Social Sciences. The School of Education is established at IIT Kharagpur with the objective to offer the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), which is the first of its kind in the IIT system. In this 4-year integrated program, the students will have a Dual Major undergraduate degree in a specific discipline along with B.Ed.”
The program is designed to be credit-based, affording students the flexibility to tailor their educational journey to their individual pace and aspirations. This innovative approach aligns with IIT Kharagpur’s vision of providing inclusive, professional, and need-based education.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will specialize in the Secondary Stage of School Education, making them eligible to become teachers at this critical educational level. The B.Sc-B.Ed program at IIT Kharagpur is set to accommodate a total of 50 students, distributed across four disciplinary majors.
