NEW DELHI, 27 OCT: In a significant stride towards technological innovation, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, officially announced IIT Mandi as the host for the pioneering 5G Use-case Lab. The announcement was made during the India Mobile Congress 2023 at Pragati Maidan, Delhi, today.
The School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) at IIT Mandi has been entrusted with the establishment of this state-of-the-art facility, aimed at fostering the development and experimentation of 5G applications across various socioeconomic sectors. This initiative is a testament to India’s commitment to advancing technology and education, aligning with the global shift towards 5G networks.
The objectives of the 5G Use-case Lab are multi-faceted. Foremost, it seeks to cultivate competencies and engagement in 5G technologies among students and the academic community. Undergraduate and postgraduate students will have the opportunity to undertake projects utilizing the 5G environment, encouraging hands-on learning and innovation.
Moreover, the lab will serve as a nexus for academia-industry collaboration, providing a platform for brainstorming and creating innovative 5G use cases. Local startups and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) will benefit from this facility by gaining access to 5G test setups, propelling India’s academia and startup ecosystem towards the future of 6G technology.
The scope of the IIT Mandi 5G Use-case Lab is expansive, exploring applications of 5G technologies in critical areas such as e-Healthcare, Smart Cities, and Next-generation Communication. By focusing on these sectors, the lab aims to revolutionize healthcare delivery, enhance urban living experiences, and pave the way for cutting-edge communication solutions.
To mark this momentous occasion, IIT Mandi organized a telecast of the announcement ceremony in its North Campus auditorium. The event witnessed the participation of approximately 600 students and faculty members from IIT Mandi, local schools, and Industrial Training Institutes. Key stakeholders from the startup sector were also present, underscoring the importance of this initiative for the broader technological landscape.
