KRISHNAGAR, 2 JAN: Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the police of Bhimpur police station on Fridayday afternoon carried out a swift anti-narcotics operation in the Naikura Khalpara area under the Asannagar gram panchayat, uncovering illegal cultivation of cannabis on fallow land.

During the raid, officers found cannabis plants being grown at multiple spots in abandoned plots, in clear violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The plants were immediately uprooted, seized and destroyed on the spot by burning, police said.
Officials stated that the operation was part of an intensified drive to curb the spread of narcotics cultivation and trafficking in rural pockets of the district. “No leniency will be shown towards those involved in the cultivation or promotion of banned narcotic crops,” a senior police officer said, adding that both direct and indirect involvement would invite stringent legal action under the NDPS Act.
Following the destruction of the illicit crop, police interacted with local residents, urging them to remain vigilant and to promptly inform authorities about any suspicious activity related to drugs. Villagers were also cautioned that allowing or facilitating such cultivation on private or unused land would attract serious penal consequences.

The police emphasised that illegal cannabis farming not only violates the law but also poses a grave threat to social order and the future of young people in the area. The drive, they said, would continue in the coming days with increased surveillance in vulnerable zones.
Calling for collective responsibility, the police appealed to the community to cooperate in their efforts to eliminate narcotics from society. “A drug-free society is possible only when citizens and law enforcement work together,” an officer remarked.
No arrests were reported till the filing of this report, and further investigation is underway to identify those behind the illegal cultivation.
