India achieves unprecedented victory at International Biology Olympiad 2023

NEW DELHI, 11 JULY: In a historic triumph, India has emerged as the champion of the 34th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in Al Ain, UAE from 3 July to 11 July 2023. The Indian team secured an astonishing feat by winning a gold medal in every category, marking the first time in IBO history that a country has achieved such a remarkable all-gold performance.

The four outstanding students who brought glory to India are Dhruv Advani from Bengaluru, Karnataka, Ishan Pednekar from Kota, Rajasthan, Megh Chhabda from Jalna, Maharashtra, and Rohit Panda from Risali, Chattisgarh. Their exceptional knowledge, skill, and dedication to biology propelled them to achieve this extraordinary milestone.

Under the guidance of esteemed leaders, Prof. Madan M. Chaturvedi, a former Senior Professor at Delhi University, and Dr. Anupama Ronad from the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), the Indian team demonstrated unrivaled excellence throughout the competition. Accompanying them were two Scientific Observers, Dr. V. V. Binoy from the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru and Dr. Rambhadur Subedi from the National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH) in Mumbai.

The IBO, a globally recognized competition, saw participation from 293 students representing 76 countries. Amidst tough competition, India showcased their superior understanding of biology and emerged as the frontrunner, securing a remarkable total of four gold medals. Singapore, the only other country to achieve this feat, also secured four gold medals, while a total of 29 gold medals were awarded in different categories.

This outstanding accomplishment in the field of biology adds to India’s previous successes in various scientific disciplines. India had previously topped the medals tally in Astronomy & Astrophysics in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2021, Physics in 2018, and Junior Science in 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022. This latest victory in the International Biology Olympiad not only reaffirms India’s exceptional talent in the scientific realm but also establishes its growing prominence on the global stage.
