NEW DELHI, 12 JULY: In a move to strengthen their bilateral ties and foster technological advancements, India and the United States have jointly launched a call for collaborative proposals on “Critical and Emerging Technology: Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence for Transforming Lives.” The initiative was announced by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US, a new chapter in the comprehensive and global strategic partnership between the two nations was emphasized. As part of this vision, India and the US are developing a strategic framework for human spaceflight cooperation, with NASA actively seeking Indian astronauts. The countries have also signed the Artemis Accords, which outline a shared vision for space exploration to benefit humanity.
The Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and the Secretariat for USISTEF have designed the collaborative program, which aims to raise the level of India’s international collaborations, particularly in the fields of science, technology, innovation, and startups. This program aligns with India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM), recently approved to promote scientific and industrial R&D in Quantum Technology (QT).
Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed his satisfaction with the swift implementation of the decisions made by the leaders of both countries and highlighted the Technology Partnership for the Future, which is energizing the Indo-American engagement, particularly in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Moreover, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the launch of a $2 million grant program under the U.S.-India Science and Technology Endowment Fund (USISTEF). The fund aims to facilitate joint development and commercialization of AI and quantum technologies, as well as encourage public-private collaborations to establish high-performance computing facilities in India.
The call for collaborative proposals on Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence will remain open until August 31, 2023. It seeks innovative and commercially viable projects that address societal challenges and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Investments in AI and quantum technology hold the potential for transformative advances across various sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and climate change, bringing substantial benefits to social well-being.
This collaborative endeavor between India and the United States signifies a renewed commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and fostering global partnerships. As both nations recognize the immense potential of AI and quantum technologies, this call for proposals serves as a significant step towards driving innovation and sustainable development on a global scale.
