India celebrates historic moment as Cheetahs make a comeback with birth of four cubs

NEW DELHI, 29 MAR: The Koon Sanctuary in India is now in a state of celebration as news of the birth of four healthy cheetah cubs to Cheetah Siya has come to light. The recent death of Cheetah Sasha had brought about a period of mourning, but the arrival of the new cubs has given new life to the sanctuary and the project as a whole.

Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav expressed his joy and congratulated the entire team of Project Cheetah for their tireless efforts to bring back cheetahs to India after a seven-decade absence. He described it as a historic day for India in terms of wildlife conservation and a step towards rectifying an ecological mistake of the past.

Dr. SP Yadav, additional director general of Project Tiger and member secretary of NTCA, confirmed that Siya gave birth to the four cubs on the night of 25-26. The Ministry of Environment released pictures and videos of the newborn cubs on Wednesday, which quickly began trending on social media.

Siya and her four cubs are currently under the watchful eye of experts, and their arrival has given new hope and life to the Cheetah family. Speculations had arisen following the untimely death of Cheetah Sasha, who was suffering from kidney disease, but the birth of the new cubs has brought about renewed optimism for the project.

Siya is one of eight cheetahs released from Namibia to Coono on 19 September to mark the Prime Minister’s birthday. As she and her cubs are kept under intensive observation in the large dome, India is celebrating a historic moment for wildlife conservation with the return of cheetahs to the country.
