India scripts history, beats 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in Thomas Cup badminton triumph

NEW DELHI, 15 MAY: In a historic feat, India won its maiden Thomas Cup title on Sunday, beating 14-time champion Indonesia 3-0 in the final in Bangkok.

Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and doubles players Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy notched up wins as the Indian camp stunned the 14-time champions to win the prestigious team championship for the first time ever.

Notably, in the second singles, Kidambi Srikanth outclassed Asian Games gold medallist Jonatan Christie 21-15 23-21 in 48 minutes to seal the historic victory.

World championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen defeated Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in the first men’s singles to give India a 1-0 lead.

In the first doubles game, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty saved four match points before beating Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19 to extend India’s lead to 2-0.

World championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth edged Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 in straight games in the second men’s singles match to seal India’s historic victory.

India had previously reached the semifinals of the Thomas Cup in 1952, 1955 and 1979.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian badminton team for winning the Thomas Cup.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said;

“The Indian badminton team has scripted history! The entire nation is elated by India winning the Thomas Cup! Congratulations to our accomplished team and best wishes to them for their future endeavours. This win will motivate so many upcoming sportspersons.”

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday announced the Indian team that won its maiden Thomas Cup title beating Indonesia 3-0 in the final, will receive a cash reward of Rs 1 crore.

Videos of the moments of victory for the India camp emerged as the historic win blew off netizens.

As Srikanth claimed the championship point, the Indian camp rushed to the court in no time. The players and support staff were seen chanting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai‘ as they etched their names into history books.
