NEW DELHI, 25 JULY: At a time when Indian athletes are battling out in the Tokyo Olympics, India grappler Priya Malik clinched gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championships on Sunday.
She defeated Kseniya Patapovich 5-0 in the summit clash and as a result, she won a gold medal at the World Cadet Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Priya Malik won in the women’s 73kg weight category and she has given the country another reason to smile as, on Saturday, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
However, Priya’s gold-winning reign should not come as a surprise, as she has been winning the colour regularly. During the 2019 edition of the Khelo India Games in Pune, she had won the same, followed by a gold medal in the 17th School Games, held in Delhi, the same year.
In the following years, she claimed a couple of more golds, which happened to be at Patna’s National Cadet Championship and National School Games. Also, with this win, she is now the first Indian to win the gold in the WWC.
Before her, Varsha had won the bronze in the 65kg category by defeating Duygu Gen of Turkey.
