KRISHNAGAR, 19 MARCH: Kalyani University has kicked off its 56th annual sports competition, promising two days filled with fervor and athleticism. The event commenced on Tuesday, witnessing a vibrant display of sportsmanship among college and university students across various disciplines. The official inauguration was graced by the esteemed presence of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amlendu Bhuiyan, who inaugurated the competition with enthusiasm and zeal.
Adding to the prestige of the occasion, Arjuna Award-winning cricketer Rakhi Halder, who clinched gold in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Championships in 2019, was honored as the chief guest. Notably, Halder is an illustrious alumnus of Kalyani University, further enhancing the connection between the institution and sporting excellence.
The event witnessed participation from 28 colleges affiliated with Kalyani University, as well as enthusiastic involvement from students of various departments including Physical Education. A total of 483 students from both colleges and the university took part in the athletic meet, competing across a spectrum of sports categories.
In his address at the inauguration, Professor Amlendu Bhuiyan emphasized the significance of cricket, labeling it as the cornerstone of the sporting world. However, he urged officials to accord due attention to athletic events, underscoring their importance in nurturing a holistic sporting culture.
Laden Lepcha, the editor of this year’s annual athletic meet and a distinguished teacher from the Physical Education department, reiterated the university’s commitment to organizing such events annually. Lepcha highlighted the platform provided by the athletic meet for identifying talented players, many of whom have gone on to represent the university, state, and nation on various sporting stages.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed a notable presence of college and university teachers, alongside trainers and teaching staff, underscoring the collective effort invested in promoting sports and athletic prowess within the university community.
As the competition unfolds over the next two days, participants and spectators alike anticipate a showcase of skill, determination, and camaraderie, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship cherished by Kalyani University.
