In his inaugural speech, Professor Bhuiyan emphasized the pivotal role of the media as the “fourth pillar of democracy.” He highlighted the necessity for impartial journalism to resolve societal challenges and commended the University’s Journalism Certificate Course for fostering a cadre of unbiased journalists who have contributed meaningfully to the social landscape.

The Vice-Chancellor also marked the conclusion of the fifth batch by distributing certificates to the students. He took the opportunity to inaugurate the sixth batch of the course, as well as two new courses under the Bengali department—’Proof Correction and Text Editing’ and ‘Film and Stage Acting’.

The festival was rich in cultural performances, with students presenting drama, poetry, and dance in celebration of the Sharadiya festival. The performances reflected the essence of the Puja, bringing to life the cultural vibrance of the season. A notable aspect of the program was the discussion on the “Tilottama incident,” which prompted engaging conversations about contemporary societal issues.

In a unique addition, professors conducted a live FM radio show for an hour and a half, filled with Puja songs and casual discussions, which added a modern media touch to the event. Speaking about the cultural aspects of the celebration, University Registrar Prof. Debanshu Roy remarked, “The drama and dance felt like I could smell the Puja. The FM presentation was really refreshing.”

Course Director Prof. Sukhen Biswas spoke about the symbiotic relationship between journalism and literature, stating, “The foundation of literature is news, and news carries the essence of literature. This interdependence was clearly demonstrated in today’s program.”

The ceremony also featured speeches by esteemed professors, including Prof. Prabir Pramanik, Prof. Nandini Bandapadhyay, Professor Savitri Nanda Chakraborty, Dr. Tushar Patua, and Dr. Shyamshree Biswas Sengupta, who shared their insights on the evolving landscape of journalism and its impact on society.
