KRISHNAGAR, 20 JULY: Adyaito Acharya alias Achinta Banerjee, a prime accused of the fake job racket who impersonated as an IAS officer, has been remanded in police custody for seven days. He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate-in-Charge Ms Rakhi Jaiswal in Krishnagar District Judges’ Court where the magistrate on hearing pleas remanded him in police custody.
The police have slapped sections – 420 and 419 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused.
The Kotwali police arrested him from his lair at Nabadwip early this morning.
One Avijit Roy, a resident of Kantaganj in Kalyani lodged a complaint with the Kotwali police a few days ago against Adyaito alleging that he had extorted Rs 2.25 lakh from him. The accused had promised his wife a job in the Kolkata police. “When I realised that it was a false promise and he was not an IAS officer, I asked him to return the money. But, he deliberately ignored it. I then lodged a complaint with the Kotwali police”, said Roy.
After receiving a complaint, the Kotwali police attempted several times to nab the accused, but last night, acting on a tip-off, the police raided his lair and arrested him, a police officer said.
This is the second consecutive racket operating in the district duping people by offering them jobs. Earlier in the first week of this month, one Radharani Biswas, the prime accused of the fake government job racket who impersonated a CID officer, was arrested from her hideout at Baigacha in Santipur. She is now in police custody.
The accused woman reportedly extorted lakhs of rupees from several youths living across the district by promising them government jobs.
More interestingly, the woman was seen at several charitable programmes during the pandemic situation where several Trinamul Congress leaders were present.
The incident triggered a political storm in Krishnagar where many Trinamul Congress leaders including ministers are allegedly involved, sources said.
Local people said the incident is similar to the case of Debanjan Deb, who posed as an IAS officer and ran fake vaccination camps in Kolkata. Debanjan had reportedly made influence with several Trinamul Congress top brasses and shared photographs of them in his social media platforms.
In June, a job racket was busted in Kolkata and four of its members arrested for allegedly duping several people by collecting anything between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh from them with a promise of employment in the Kolkata Metro Railway.
Acting on a complaint filed by an official of the Kolkata Metro, the police arrested the four from different locations in Nadia district.
“The four accused identified themselves as senior officials of Kolkata Metro Railway and produced fake ID cards and email addresses,” an officer said.
After scanning the call detail records (CDRs) of the mobile numbers allegedly used by them, the police conducted raids at different places in Nadia district and nabbed the four, he stated.
