The Krishnagar Cyber Crime police officials launched an investigation after a complainant from one Tanay Basu of Nazirapara in Krishnagar lost around Rs 22000 in 2020.

Rajesh Kumar Gupta, IC, Krishnagar Cyber Crime Police Station said the complainant primarily lost Rs 50 through Google Pay as his transaction was somehow failed. To resolve this problem, he contacted customer care service of Google Pay on google search option where he found a number. Whenever he called the number, he instantly got trapped.

Mr Gupta said the online-fraud gang used to put fake customer care numbers on google and pretended to be executives of companies.

The complainant had found such a fake number on google and called the number which was on the top of the google search. The fraudsters, who are basically the employees of the online-fraud gang with a monthly salary of Rs 20000, called back the complainant and assured him to resolve the dispute, Mr Gupta said.

The fraudsters asked the complainant to download Anydesk app on his mobile and submit his complaint with his bank account details. As soon as he submitted his complaint, the fraudsters withdrew the money kept in his account. Anydesk app is remote assistance software, by which the fraudsters got control of the complainant’s mobile and defrauded him, Mr Gupta said.

While answering to a question, Mr Gupta said, “While conducting investigation, the Central Database Service of the central government provided information that the user of the mobile number which used the fraudster was arrested in another fraud case and he was in jail custody at Deoghar. We went there and pursued a production warrant for the last three months. Finally, our appeal was granted and the accused were handed over before the Krishnagar judges’ court.
