Announcing this while observing the International Women’s Day in the university campus, Vice-chancellor of the varsity, Prof Manas Kumar Sanyal, on Tuesday, said, “Our scholars have already submitted papers in this regard and we have chosen to adopt five villages which are most backward in the areas surrounding to our university. We have already worked during Covid situation in these villages.”

The five villages – Char Jajira, Char Jatra Siddhi, Char Jadu Bati, Kacharipra and Chowdhuripara – are the most backward tribal areas in Kalyani Sub-division where rate of literacy and health awareness among the residents are very poor.

The university has also recognized two tribal women – one Sandhya Mandi from Birbhum and Urmila Murmu from Bankura for their outstanding and exceptional contribution in spreading education among the students during a pandemic situation when all schools remained closed.

The duo had taught education to the students in their locality during the most critical time when students couldn’t go to schools for months.

“I saw that students who used to go schools were detached from education during Covid situation. I felt that if I teach them in their language (Ol Chiki), they will continue to study. I then started teaching them so that their habits to read books are continued,” said Sandhya.

“I also preferred to teach in Ol Chiki language on the view that this tribal language will complete its 100th year in 2025. To connect the tribal students through their own scripts, I preferred to teach them in their own language,” Sandhya said.

The university’s education department, Center for Cultural Studies, IQAC and Center for Women Studies jointly organized a programme to celebrate the International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

The themes of “Break the Bias” and “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” were in focus on the global day dedicated to women’s rights.

Inaugurating the programme, Prof Sanyal hailed the contribution of women and pledged to work for their empowerment. “Women have made exceptional contributions to the university. We are proud of them,” he said, adding that the university will inaugurate a residential building for women on Wednesday.

Prof Goutam Paul, pro-VC of the university also highlighted the contribution of women in the society.

In the programme, Debjani Guha, head of the education department, Deblina Debnath and Sujay Kumar Mondol, joint directors of Centre for Cultural Studies, Nanda Kumar Ghosh, director of IQAC and Kakali Dhara, director of Centre for Women Studies also delivered their speeches.
