KOLKATA, 19 DEC: Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Sunday appointed former Janata Dal (United) leader Pavan Kumar Varma as the vice president of All India Trinamul Congress with immediate effect.
A TMC press release said Miss Banerjee takes a great pride in appointing Mr Varma as the vice-president of her party with immediate effect.
Mr Varma, a former IFS officer, who was previously with the Janata Dal (United), had recently joined the TMC in New Delhi. The former diplomat’s induction as AITC vice-president is expected to boost AITC’s national presence, the release said.
Mr Varma apart from working as an advisor to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, was also a spokesperson for JD(U).
“In my view, Mamata Banerjee and All India Trinamul Congress, in its new avatar, has the potential to create a pan Indian opposition,” Mr Varma said upon his induction to the party as national vice president.
Mr Varma is acclaimed for his literary genius and academic creations with the credit of authoring more than a dozen books. He has authored many books including The Havel is of Old Delhi, Krishna-The Playful Divine, The Great India Muddle Class (non-fiction), and others.
Mr Varma is a former Indian Foreign Service Officer and was also an advisor to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. From June 2014 till July 2016, Mr Varma was Rajya Sabha MP and also held the position of the JDU’s National General Secretary and National Spokesperson. In 2019, he along with Prashant Kishor were expelled from JDU over ‘anti-party’ activities. JDU leader KC Tyagi had clarified that both had been expelled for repeatedly issuing controversial statements against the party and its national president Nitish Kumar. Both Kishor and Varma were against JDU’s stand over the CAA and the NRC.
